When is Chart Prepared for Indian Railways Trains?
The reservation chart is the final list of passengers for each coach in an Indian Railways train. Chart preparation is one of the most important events for passengers with WL (Waitlist) or RAC tickets. After the chart is prepared, no new reservations are issued for that train, and pending WL e-tickets are auto-cancelled. How many hours before departure is the chart prepared?
Indian Railways typically prepares the reservation chart 4 hours before the scheduled departure from the origin station. For some trains, a first chart is prepared and a second (final) chart may be prepared 30–60 minutes before departure.
What happens to WL tickets after chart preparation?
After chart preparation, e-tickets (booked on IRCTC) that remain on WL status are automatically cancelled and fully refunded to the passenger's payment source within 5–7 business days. WL counter tickets are not auto-cancelled — those passengers must cancel manually.
What happens to RAC tickets after chart preparation?
RAC passengers whose status does not upgrade to CNF by chart time will still be on RAC and CAN board the train. They share a berth until the TTE upgrades them if a CNF passenger does not show up.
Can I check if the chart has been prepared?

Can I board with a WL ticket after the chart is prepared?
No — if your e-ticket is still on WL after chart preparation, it is cancelled. Do not attempt to board in reserved coaches. If you have a counter ticket on WL, you may travel in general (unreserved) coaches only, but this is not advisable for long journeys.
