What is WL in Railway? — Waitlist Explained
WL stands for Waitlist. In Indian Railways, a Waitlist ticket means your booking is in a queue — you are not yet confirmed for a berth. If passengers ahead of you in the queue cancel their tickets, you move up. If you reach CNF (Confirmed) or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) status by the time the chart is prepared (4 hours before departure), you can travel. If still on WL after chart preparation, your e-ticket is automatically cancelled and refunded. There are several types of Waitlist with different confirmation probabilities.

Can WL (Waitlist) passengers board the train?
WL passengers whose status is still WL after chart preparation CANNOT board the train in reserved coaches. E-tickets are automatically cancelled and refunded. Counter (PRS) ticket holders on WL can travel in general coaches only, but this is not recommended for long journeys.
What are the types of Waitlist in Indian Railways?
The main types are: GNWL (General Waitlist) from the journey's origin — highest confirmation chance. RLWL (Remote Location Waitlist) for intermediate station quotas — moderate chances. PQWL (Pooled Quota Waitlist) for specific station pairs — lower confirmation chances. RQWL, TQWL, HQWL are other quota-specific waitlists.
Which WL type confirms most easily?
GNWL (General Waitlist) has the highest confirmation probability since it draws from the largest pool of cancellations on the full route. PQWL confirms less easily as it only draws from specific segment cancellations. For GNWL, positions WL/1 to WL/10 typically confirm on most routes.
When is a WL ticket automatically cancelled?
E-tickets (booked on IRCTC) that remain on WL status after chart preparation (4 hours before departure) are automatically cancelled and fully refunded to the booking account. Counter tickets are not auto-cancelled — the passenger must cancel manually.
