GNWL stands for General Waitlist. It is the most common and most favorable waitlist type in Indian Railways. GNWL is assigned when you book a ticket from or close to the origin station of the train. Since cancellations from the full route benefit GNWL passengers, it has the highest confirmation probability among all waitlist types. GNWL/1 to GNWL/20 typically confirm on most routes. What does GNWL mean on my railway ticket?
GNWL (General Waitlist) means your booking is in the general waitlist queue starting from the train's origin station. It has the best confirmation chances compared to RLWL, PQWL, and other quota waitlists.
How does GNWL differ from RLWL?
GNWL (General Waitlist) is assigned for bookings from or near the train origin and draws from all cancellations on the route — highest confirmation chance. RLWL (Remote Location Waitlist) is assigned for intermediate station boardings and draws from a smaller pool of cancellations — lower confirmation chance.
Up to what GNWL number is likely to confirm?
This depends heavily on the route, train, and class. For popular trains and routes, GNWL/1 to GNWL/20 typically confirm. For less popular routes, GNWL/30+ may still confirm. There is no universal rule — check our PNR tool for real-time status and track movement.
When does GNWL get updated?
GNWL position updates in real-time as other passengers cancel tickets. The biggest movement happens in the 48–24 hours before departure and again 4 hours before departure when charts are prepared. Monitor your PNR regularly.
If GNWL doesn't confirm, do I get a refund?
Yes — e-tickets (IRCTC) remaining on WL/GNWL after chart preparation are automatically cancelled and fully refunded. Counter tickets must be manually cancelled for a refund (minus clerkage charges).
