What does CNF mean on a railway ticket?
CNF means Confirmed — your berth or seat is allotted. After chart preparation, your exact coach, berth number, and seat type (Lower Berth/Upper Berth/Side Lower etc.) is shown in the CNF status. You can board the reserved coach and occupy your assigned berth.
What does RAC mean and can I travel on it?
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) means you can board the train but share a lower berth with one other RAC passenger. If a confirmed passenger does not travel, the TTE upgrades you to a full berth. RAC is better than WL — you are guaranteed to travel.
What does WL mean and can I travel on it?
WL (Waitlist) means your booking is in a queue. If other passengers cancel, you move up. If you remain WL after chart preparation, your e-ticket is auto-cancelled. WL passengers cannot board reserved coaches. Counter ticket WL holders can travel in general coaches only.
When does a ticket show the coach and berth number?
The coach and berth number (e.g., S2, LB 34) appears in your PNR status only after chart preparation, which happens approximately 4 hours before departure. Before that, confirmed tickets show CNF but without specific berth details.
What if I was CNF but now see a different berth?
This can happen due to coach changes by Indian Railways after chart preparation. Check the final reservation chart posted on the platform or use our PNR tool 1–2 hours before departure to see the latest berth details.
