How do I use the Coach Position tool?
Open our Coach Position tool. Enter the 5-digit train number and station code (the station where you are boarding). The tool shows the coach composition — each coach in order from the engine — with position from both front and rear of the train.
What does "Engine End" and "Guard End" mean?
"Engine End" is the front of the train where the locomotive is. "Guard End" is the rear where the guard coach is. Coach positions are measured from the engine end, so Coach 1 is closest to the engine.
Can coach positions change?
Yes — coach composition can change due to: rake reversal at terminal stations, addition of extra coaches on festivals, coach swaps for maintenance. Always verify coach position from the actual reservation chart at the station, especially for festival season travel.
What if my coach number starts with "D" or "E"?
Coaches starting with "D" are Disabled-friendly (Divyangjan) coaches. "E" prefixed coaches are Executive class. "G" is General/Unreserved. "B" is 3AC, "A" is 2AC or 1AC, "H" is Executive AC Chair Car. The prefix indicates the class type.
How far in advance is coach position available?
Coach position data becomes most reliable after chart preparation (4 hours before departure). Before that, standard rake composition is shown but may not reflect last-minute changes like extra coaches added for festivals.
